Helvetia Libertas,

Inspired by the historical figure Helvetia and the Roman goddess of liberty, Libertas, the project aims to create a visible symbol of the importance of freedom in modern Switzerland. The project was initiated by Basel-based writer Claude Cueni, who has been exploring social and political issues for years. The planned statue is not intended to be a political monument, but rather a cultural affirmation of the fundamental values of the Swiss Confederation. Who is Claude Cueni?

Born in Basel in 1956, Cueni left the traditional educational path early on and instead gained real-world experience. He worked as a waiter, mail carrier, copywriter, court clerk, and salesman, among other jobs, before devoting himself entirely to writing.

His books have been translated into numerous languages, and his TV crime dramas have been broadcast in over a hundred countries. He became particularly well-known for his historical novels about politics, religion, power, and money—themes that run like a common thread through his entire body of work.

A Life Full of Setbacks

Claude Cueni’s biography reads, at times, more dramatically than many of his novels

. His son Clovis was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as an infant. For years, the family trained him for several hours a day at home, following a neurologist’s instructions. Later, Cueni lost his first wife to cancer.

In 2009, another severe blow followed: acute lymphocytic leukemia. After chemotherapy, radiation, cerebral hemorrhages, and a bone marrow transplant, Cueni fought his way back to life. To this day, he suffers from the long-term effects of his illness.
